Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to contest specific decisions from the official, mirroring the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
